This form comes to me, not to an office. Readers, students, festival programmers and people who found a copy in a charity shop all use the same box, which is how I would like to keep it.

Before you write

Four things I am asked every week

Will you read my manuscript?
Not for free and not unsolicited, but I do take a handful of paid reports a year. The terms are on the homepage. If you send pages without asking first they go unread, which is nobody's fault but saves us both a fortnight.
Will you blurb my book?
Sometimes, and only when I have actually read it and can say something true. Ask through your editor with a date attached, and accept that a no is about time rather than about the book.
When is the next one out?
The Salt Line is out on 14 March. The one after it is in notebook thirty-one and will take as long as it takes, which on past form is somewhere between two and three years.
Do you answer letters?
Yes, all of them, badly and late. If you have not heard back in a month it is because the pile fell over, so write again.
